When We Turned Into Eagles

  • The danger of sliding into fascism
  • Topical subjects of exclusion and racism – which concern us all
  • For readers aged 9 +

Jannik and his friends spend their afternoons with role-playing games, often re-enacting stories which Jannik’s older brother Bo tells them. For Jannik’s eleventh birthday, Bo introduces them to a new game.
Quite soon it turns out that this one is different from the childish games they used to play before. Now they are “Eagles”, and that involves being strong and to create uniformity and a sense of belonging by acting and looking the same.
Jannik and his friends enjoy this new game and the attitude that goes along with it, but soon they have to define new rules on who is worthy to be a member of their group and who isn’t.
Loni, Jannik’s long-time best friend stands out because of the colour of her skin. When Loni disappears one day, it becomes evident that what started as a game has long turned into something very serious.
