Bremen at the turn of the century: For thirteen years Marguerite has led a life as the daughter of a rich Bremen merchant. Over night she loses everything she loves: Her parents, her home and her best female friend. Alone and without means Marguerite has to toil until her fingers bleed. When she accidentally learns that the consul’s daughter is to be kidnapped she wants to warn her. Covered in a red velvet cape Marguerite is mistaken for her and becomes the victim herself. In the last second she manages to flee. Suddenly the tide turns. Consul Poggenpohl, her father’s friend is revealed to be a scrupulous fraud and Marguerite retrieves her inheritance.
