It's a disaster! Winnie's family has just moved to this boring little village when her dad announces that they won't be going on holiday this summer as usual. Instead, they're going to have a relaxing holiday in the garden. If only it weren't for the neighbour, Mr Radetzky! He hammers, saws and knocks incessantly on his terrace. No amount of persuasion helps! Luckily, Winnie quickly finds a friend. With John around, staying at home suddenly isn't so boring anymore! Together they explore the surrounding area. But even at the lake and in the forest, there is knocking and hammering. It's a woodpecker, but it's even stranger than Mr Radetzky – so strange that it appears in Winnie's dreams at night! And then events come to a head and things that shouldn't be possible start happening.
