Wanted: a shelter for (talking) animals!

Emma loves ponies, just like any other girl. But she is probably the only one who finds a talking pony at her doorstep. The pony introduces herself as Klara, and tells Emma that she is in great distress. The owner of the farm Klara has been living on wants to get rid of her, together with her four animal friends who – like her – are no longer very young or fit. Dog Frieder is lame and hoarse; Susi the cat is toothless and no longer a threat to any mouse; Hildegard the sheep is too old to have any more lambs; and Waldemar the goat seems to annoy the farmer by being so smelly.

To Emma, it all seems very clear: the animals need a new home! But when Emma and her brother Hugo put up the five animals in their garage their problems only start ...

Hiltrud Baier

Hiltrud Baier’s German-Swedish family saga derives its authenticity from the fact that the author, a native of Southern Germany, later emigrated to Lapland. What Baier particularly loves about Northern Sweden is its spectacular landscape, and the fact that you can wander for hours without meeting another living soul. She’s not so fond of the sub-zero temperatures and the long periods of darkness in winter. But she has developed a good antidote: a crackling log fire, Samian music, and lots of hot tea.
The author lives with her husband in Jokkmokk in Swedish Lapland, and has two daughters.
