Luminous Fish

  • A light-footed novel about origins, family, guilt – and the courage to face one’s fears

Malina was still young when her parents adopted Melek, who is the same age as her. She had always wanted a sister, but Melek she could never really accept. On the contrary – as the Perseids hurled one shooting star after another from the sky, Malina wished that Melek would simply disappear … and now, ten years later, her wish seems to be coming true. On the very night that Malina is making out with Melek’s great love Micha, the Perseids sweep through the sky again: and Melek crashes her bike into a car door and falls into a coma. Malina believes she is to blame and wants desperately to make it up to her. In a wild moment she decides to fly to Melek’s birthplace Istanbul to try and tempt fate (without really knowing how). But on her journey, Malina discovers that her adopted sister’s story has already become her own – much more than she realised.
